HOW DOES TENS WORK?
Pain modulation
For pain to be perceived there is usually a chain whereby peripheral receptors are stimulated by a noxious physical or chemical agent and this stimulus is carried by peripheral nerves to the spinal cord, up to the cord, through the brainstem and so to the cerebral cortex, where the pain is appreciated by the conscious level. This route necessarily involves a number of synapses and the inhibition of impulses on their route to the cortex is the mechanism whereby pain can be modulated.
A TENS unit has controls that allow people to administer an appropriate level of pain relief. It can be achieved by altering the intensity, frequency, and duration of the impulse. It may help in treating the following symptoms:
- Chronic pain syndromes
- Period Pain
- Joint Pain
- Muscular pain
- Ligamentous pain
- Neck and Back Pain
It may also alleviate the pain that results from the following:
- Sports Injury
- Multiple Sclerosis
- Fibromyalgia
- Myofascial trigger points

BACK PAIN RELIEF
During a TENS treatment for back pain, electrodes are placed on the skin over an area of pain in the back. This creates electrical impulses that travel along nerve fibers and create a tingling sensation. The pain relief usually starts immediately and stops shortly after treatment. By reducing swelling and increasing circulation, electric muscle stimulation therapy may also enhance tissue healing and help control inflammation. And it may help reduce pain sensations by blocking nerve transmission at the spinal cord.

SHOULDER PAIN RELIEF
TENS treatment on the shoulder, acromion or shoulder joint can relieve and relax tense and hardened muscles. It stimulates blood circulation and leads to a better supply of nutrients to the tissue. TENS can also help with inflammation of the bursa.

ELBOW PAIN RELIEF
A TENS application on the elbow often provides relatively quick pain relief. The appropriate device setting and positioning of the TENS electrodes can ensure an interruption of pain transmission through the nerves to the brain. EMS Unit can be a great tool for helping to relieve tennis elbow & golfer's elbow pain.

KNEE PAIN RELIEF
Neuromuscular electrical stimulation is often part of physical therapy for knee injuries. It's a specialty treatment that helps to increase muscle force, reduce knee pain, and improve function. Beyond injuries, this treatment is also helpful for joint pain, as it can help with swelling and inflammation. Electrostimulation is a highly valued tool among experts for the rehabilitation or recovery of the knees when an injury occurs, or simply to strengthen them during training.

Electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) treatment is a form of physical therapy and muscle spasm treatment that uses electrical impulses to stimulate the muscles. This type of therapy can be used to relieve pain, improve blood circulation and promote healing. The therapy uses low-frequency electrical currents to stimulate the muscles and nerves. Conditions it can treat include:
- Muscle weakness
- Nerve damage
- Chronic pain
- Auto accident injuries
Why EMS Helps Treat Injuries
EMS treatment helps to treat injuries by stimulating the muscles and nerves. This stimulation can help to:
- Reduce inflammation
- Promote blood flow
- Reduce muscle spasms
- Increase range of motion
- Increase strength and endurance
- Improve coordination
The reason muscle stimulation causes these positive effects is not fully understood, but it is thought that the electrical impulses help to increase the release of natural pain relievers called endorphins. Endorphins are natural painkillers that can help to reduce pain and inflammation.

Benefits of T.E.N.S :-
T.E.N.S is a non-invasive, practical and safe method to help ease both acute and chronic pain. It is an alternative to medication and designed so that you can move around with it working.
What are the advantages or benefits of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) therapy?
TENS is a non-invasive method of pain relief. It can be used alone or in addition to prescriptions or over-the-counter pain-relieving medications. The amount of medication may be able to be reduced in some patients who use TENS therapy. Do not stop taking or make any adjustments in your dose of medications without discussing it with your doctor first.
Another benefit of the TENS unit is that it is small and portable and therefore can be used at home or away, anytime pain relief is needed.
Benefits of EMS?
There are several uses for EMS and NMES which include:
- Pain relief. EMS can be used at low levels to reduce the amount of pain you experience. This can be done by modulating the amount of pain signals to the brain or releasing natural pain-killers called endorphins.
- Muscle contraction. EMS can be used at different intensities to stimulate a muscle or help maintain muscle tone. Examples of this type of therapy include:Following a stroke, EMS can be used to maintain some muscle tone in the shoulder to improve function and reduce pain. To treat urinary incontinence, EMS may be used to contract the pelvic floor muscles. Following surgery, EMS can be used to stimulate the muscles in the thigh to increase strength.
Benefits of EMS include:
- Decreasing pain
- Promote tissue healing
- Increase muscle strength
- Maintaining and regaining muscle activity

A transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) unit is a battery-operated device that may help treat period pain, joint pain, fibromyalgia and other types of pain. Research has not proven that it works, but it seems to relieve pain during use. TENS units work by delivering small electrical impulses through electrodes that have adhesive pads to attach them to a person’s skin. These electrical impulses flood the nervous system, reducing its ability to transmit pain signals to the spinal cord and brain. The same electrical impulses also stimulate the body to produce natural pain relievers called endorphin
TENS units may help treat the following symptoms:

- labor pain
- postoperative pain
- joint pain
- neck and back pain
