What Is Ultrasound Therapy ?

Ultrasound therapy is an electrotherapy which has been used in physiotherapy practices for many years. It is mainly used for its non-thermal effect where high frequency sound waves cause vibrations and movement of cellular fluids.

Proposed benefits of ultrasound therapy include improving the healing rate of certain soft tissues.

It is hypothesized to :

  • Increase blood flow to an area in order to accelerate the resolution time of the inflammatory process.
  • Stimulate the production of collagen (the main protein in tendons and ligaments) during tissue healing.

Common Injuries Treated With Ultrasound :-

  • Bursitis
  • Muscular Pain and swelling
  • Muscle Strain and tears
  • Joint Pain
  • Ligament and tendon injuries

Ultrasound Therapy has got numerous benefits as it can be used for a vast range of issues. However its most commonly used for:

  • Heating and relaxing the muscles in order to alleviate the pain.
  • Increasing the blood flow i.e. lymph (lymph: a fluid that carries white blood cells throughout the body) to enhance the healing process not only of muscles but also joints and ligaments.
  • Softening of any existing scar tissue.
  • A low-intensity Pulsed Ultrasound (LIPUS) is used for fracture repair.
  • Management of the Knee Pain

It is a general term that is used to define the inflammation of the tendon tissue that connects the muscle to the bone. This is the most common cause of soft-tissue pain. It can occur at any age but it is more common in adults who do a lot of sports. Old-age people are also prone to it as the tendons tend to lose their elasticity and become weaker with age. Its common types are:

  • Tennis Elbow
  • Golfer's Elbow
  • Joint Pain
  • Jumper's Knee
  • Swimmer's Shoulder
  • Trigger Finger or Thumb
  • Ganglion

SHOULDER PAIN RELIEF

As such, ultrasound therapy is often used to treat injuries and muscle spasms, as well as chronic issues like neck shoulder pain. The therapy appears to be very safe, has few adverse effects, and is relatively inexpensive.

NECK PAIN RELIEF

As such, ultrasound therapy is often used to treat injuries and muscle spasms, as well as chronic issues like neck or back pain. therapeutic ultrasound may be a safe and effective treatment for neck pain. The therapy appears to be very safe, has few adverse effects, and is relatively inexpensive.

BACK PAIN RELIEF

Ultrasound therapy is the use of sound waves (vibrations) to treat medical problems. It is commonly used to treat low back pain. The therapy appears to be very safe, has few adverse effects, and is relatively inexpensive.

KNEE PAIN RELIEF

Therapeutic ultrasound is a non-invasive treatment that may be effective in treating pain in the knee and hip. The therapy appears to be very safe, has few adverse effects, and is relatively inexpensive.

WHAT IS TENS ?

It is one of the methods of electrical stimulation whose primary aim is to provide a degree of symptomatic pain relief by exciting sensory nerves. TENS units work by delivering small electrical impulses through electrodes that have adhesive pads to attach them to a person's skin. These electrical impulses flood the nervous system, reducing its ability to transmit pain signals to the spinal cord and brain.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS AND CONDITIONS TREATED BY TENS?

A TENS unit has controls that allow people to administer an appropriate level of pain relief. It can be achieved by altering the intensity, frequency, and duration of the impulse. It may help in treating the following symptoms:

  • Period Pain
  • Labor Pain
  • Postoperative Pain
  • Joint Pain
  • Muscular pain
  • Sports Injury
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Myofascial trigger points
  • Spinal Cord Injury
  • Amputation

What is transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) therapy?

Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) is a therapy that uses low voltage electrical current to provide pain relief. A TENS unit consists of a battery-powered device that delivers electrical impulses through electrodes placed on the surface of your skin. The electrodes are placed at or near nerves where the pain is located or at trigger points.

How does transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) work?

There are two theories about how transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) works. One theory is that the electric current stimulates nerve cells that block the transmission of pain signals, modifying your perception of pain. The other theory is that nerve stimulation raises the level of endorphins, which are the body’s natural pain-removal chemical. The endorphins then block the perception of pain.

What is transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) therapy used to treat?

TENS therapy has been used or is being studied to relieve both chronic (long lasting) and acute (short-term) pain. Some of the most common conditions for which TENS has been used include:

  • Joint Pain
  • Fibromyalgia (aching and pain in muscles, tendons, and joints all over the body, especially along the spine.
  • Tendinitis (an inflammation or irritation of a tendon).
  • Bursitis (inflammation of the fluid-filled sacs that cushion joints).
  • Labor pain.
  • Low back pain.
  • Chronic pelvic pain.
  • Sugar related neuropathy (damage to the nerves that connect the brain and spinal cord to the rest of the body).
  • Peripheral artery disease (“hardening of the arteries” that circulate blood to the body).
